The Last Dance and the Legacy of Michael Jordan

May 19, 2020

Sadly the only show the sports world can look forward to has finished Sunday night. The Last Dance was a spectacular 10 part documentary capturing Jordan and his 90s Bulls. After watching this documentary there should be no debate on who the best player to ever live was, and that man is Michael Jordan.

This documentary goes through Jordan in his college life all the way to end the of his Bulls career. In his career he took one of the worst teams in basketball to one of the best dynasties this sport has ever seen. In his time with the Bulls Jordan finished with 6 rings and 2 different 3 peat spells.

Going back to back is difficult enough, but winning 3 in a row, 2 different times is just insane and should get an incredible amount of praise. The fact that the Warriors with Durant, Klay, and Steph could never repeat should put even more praise on the Bulls. Eliminating Hall of Famers constantly each and every year was second nature for them. In Jordan’s career he eliminated 20 Hall of Famers in the playoffs.

After watching this, Jordan’s love should be going through the roof. Seeing how competitive this guy was is unbelievable. He would have to make up stories to piss himself off. Making up a story of a kid calling you “Mike” is on another level. Or maybe having BJ Armstrong beat him in a game 2 was enough for Jordan to buy the Hornets and make them the worst team in the NBA. He just found another part of him that could go deeper than anyone else. Jordan was the best of everyone he fought….except maybe this legend.

This might be the only guy Jordan loses sleep over. As that might be a joke, it was obvious in the video how much it irked him to lose to this guy. Jordan’s competitiveness compares to no other. The guy gave a shit every night he played and that is something I have never seen since I have been alive as an NBA fan. He cared about the idea that people may only get one chance to see him play in person and he took that to heart. He even had the Georgia Dome packed out to watch a regular season basketball game.

Can we just realize for a moment the coaches this guy had in his career. He had Deen Smith, Roy Williams, Doug Collins, Phil Jackson, and Terry Francona. That is some Forest Gump type shit.

After watching this it should be clear that Jordan is the best basketball player to ever live. His work ethic is unparalleled. At the end of episode 7 when his trainer was speaking on how Jordan worked from Baseball shape back to Basketball shape, the guy was getting emotional talking about it. It was even emotional as a fan watching just seeing how emotional this guy was getting. Jordan just had an uncanny ability to effect people around him on an emotional level.

Jordan can not be the only one thought of on these bulls teams. We cannot forget that he had lots of help over the years. He had some GREAT teammates. He had future Hall of Famers in Scottie Pippen, and Dennis Rodman. He had all stars in Horace Grant, BJ Armstrong, and Toni Kukoc. He then had great role players in John Paxson, Steve Kerr, Bill Cartwright, and Scott Burwell. Then to top off the great players he played with he had a Hall of Fame coach in Phil Jackson.

They became even better players playing with him. With the intensity of playing with Jordan these guys just got better and better. Jordan did not care if you liked him or not, all he cared about was winning basketball games. It might have felt like the guys were playing for him instead of with him, but they became great because of it. But Jordan’s drive is something the world should admire.

The world may never see a star player as popular as Jordan too. He was bombarded everywhere he went and he was kind to fans and reporters. He had everyone watching him and had barely any haters. The only stars in sports that I can think of that are as popular as Michael Jordan are Tiger Woods and Lionel Messi, and those two don’t compare to Mike. All in all, it was a tough job being Michael Jordan and it had to exhaust him.

Jordan should be admired by the world after watching this documentary. The passion he had to get better each day and beat the guy in front of him should drive us to be better competitors. The fear he put into opponents eyes might actually make him “Black Jesus”, and the world just got to look into Jesus’s mind for the past month.

Thank you Jordan for giving the world an insight on your mind and giving everything you had to the game of basketball.
